QuoteWhen I came home from the hospital with my first child two weeks ago, I thought I was all set to breastfeed. I had taken a breastfeeding class during my pregnancy and things went really well in the hospital after my son was born. I had two lactation consultants who helped me in the hospital and they assured me I was set. But the day I got home, my milk came in and I got engorged, and my son, who had been latching on so wonderfully before, became inconsolable because he couldn't latch on and he was hungry. After one sleepless night of this, my nerves were absolutely fried and I was ready to go out and buy formula. I remembered that the hospital had given me a list of lactation consultants who did home visits, so I decided to try one of them and see if I could get someone right away. I called Barbara at 8 AM and she was here by 11 AM. She was just wonderful- very soothing personality and she made me feel confident, like I could succeed at this. She showed me how to express my milk so that my nipple and areola were soft enough for him to latch on, and low and behold, he did! She also showed me several different positions I could use and how to do them in my house in my own bed/chair with my own pillows, which was very helpful. We have had great success ever since, when my son went for his 6 day check-up (just 2 days after Barbara came to visit) he had already gained back his birth weight. She also suggested that I get my midwife to prescribe some nipple ointment since my nipples were cracked and raw from a few bad initial latches in the hospital, and I am SO GLAD she suggested that, because the cream helped tremendously and my nipples have healed up really nicely. In sum, if I hadn't had Barabara come, I really don't think I would have continued breastfeeding even though I now know that I am more than capable of doing it and it is such a wonderful experience (I really can't imagine that I got so worked up I considered not doing it, I mean, I was REALLY committed, but you can only listen to your baby scream in hunger for so long before you'll do anything to fix it). This was the best $220 I have ever spent in my life, I am not exaggerating. Even if you think you are prepared to breastfeed, I would suggest setting up at appt. with Barbara for your first or second day home from the hospital, I am going to suggest that all of my friends do this.

QuoteA few days after my son was born I was feeling tired and overwhelmed, like most new moms. It was very important to me that I try my hardest to breastfeed my newborn son. It was more difficult than I thought it would be so I reached out to Barbara Hardin from The Mother's Milk Company. She was extremely responsive and met my husband and I at our home the day after I initially called her. Barbara took her time, clearly explained the basics and gave me helpful hints that made nursing so much easier! By the time she left our home that first day I felt so much more confident and I'm happy to report I've been successfully breastfeeding for the last 5 weeks! All new mother's could benefit from Barbara's help!!

QuoteMy now 8 week old daughter and I had a really difficult time in the early days of breastfeeding. We called Barbara and she came right away to see us. She is extremely practical and non-judgemental. She found solutions that worked for us. We would have given up and pumped and bottled if we hadn't had the support and advice from Barbara. Best of all, I've been able to call with follow up questions. I highly recommend this company!

QuoteBarbara was very prompt and came quickly the same day I called for help. She helped us with latching and gave good advice for my breast issues (mastitis, thrush). Overall, the experience was reassuring and very helpful and it gave me more confidence to continue with the breastfeeding. She has also been readily available via telephone with follow up issues. I highly recommend this service to a new mom.

QuoteI went to first baby dr. appt to find out that my daughter was not gaining enough weight. This of course caused me extreme stress. I called the Mother's Milk Company for help with breast feeding. A lactcation consultant with close to 30 years of experience came over. She was fabulous. Very matter of fact, non-judgemental. She provided both helpful technique advice and explanations as to why things are the way they are. She stayed for close to two hours. I never felt rushed or that she was trying to get off to her next appointment - a very different feel from Prentice where the consultant spent 90 seconds with me. When the consultant from Mother's Milk Company left, my confidence was much improved from where it had been. My daughter is now eating very well. The consultant called a few days after her visit to check in and encouraged me to call back anytime with questions or concerns. This is money well spent for both the baby's health and the mother's peace of mind. I highly recommend the service.
