Dr. Urbach took a lot of time with me to discuss my daughter during our first visit (we switched from another practice). All of the nurses that helped us were very nice as well.

Dr. Joffe is not for everyone. He stresses independence in the child and can shock some parents at the level of independence he advises. But if you agree with that approach, you will greatly appreciate his sensible advice and sound approach to illness, medication, etc.

Dr. Joffe is incredibly direct and very clear on how to help new parents have the best experience with a newborn. Everything he told us to do has worked beautifully, even if it's not the popular thing to do right now. For example, he insisted that I needed 6-8 hours uninterrupted sleep for the first night in the hospital after my 27 hour labor and delivery. "Rooming in" is the practice at Marin General, but he made my husband and I comfortable with requesting that the baby spend the entire night in the nursery and that I should not be woken up to feed him that first night. I looked and felt so much better the next day because I slept 9.5 hours straight! He is very supportive of breastfeeding but not at the expense of me as a mother. Dr. Joffe is adamant about Dad's involvement in well-baby visits and participation in parenting. That philosophy fit for us. The nurses and staff in the Novato office are outstanding and so caring.

We love Dr. Urbach, but Joffe can be parternalistic. You never have to wait more than 5 mins, which is fabulous.

Not everyone loves Dr. Joffe, but I do. He is a no-nonsense physician who advocates fostering the child's independence at an early age (he is thus NOT a proponent of co-sleeping.) He goes beyond his role as pediatrician, and gives incredibly useful counsel about nutrition, behavior, and development.
