"the word-of-mouth survival guide for SAN DIEGO parents"
Review added 6/2/2008

As zoos go, SA has a fairly decent one. They have a great "Tiny Tots" section aimed at the under 5 crowd. They even have a little beach - sand and stream for the kids to play in. Surprisingly it's very well kept and not dirty as one might expect. The new hippo exhibit is a must see, it's really cool to watch the hippos, I think the adults enjoy it far more than the kids, as the kids always want to get to the next animal. A couple of fun secrets- the older gibbon - kept in the corner by the butterfly exhibit will "sing" to you if you "sing" back. the tone is hard to describe but it's a whooping noise "ooohhhhhhp". She sings to my 4 yr old everytime. It's uncanny. Another hint- a parking one- if you get there early enough you can get great parking in the side lot right next to the zoo. Lastly go in the morning before it gets too hot, the animals will still be awake.
