"the word-of-mouth survival guide for SAN FRANCISCO parents"

If your kids have never been to a zoo, this is a good 1st time zoo adventure. Small enough not to overwhelm. If they have been to the San Diego zoo, well they might be disappointed, but it all depends on the animals. There is always the chance of seeing something remarkable.

The tot area is so great, some parts air conditioned and great beach area. The rest of the zoo makes me so sad, so many animals in enclosures that are completely opposite of where they would live in the wild(the gazelles in a concrete step enclosure)or the elephant that is living by herself because they won't release her to a sanctuary. I feel very lukewarm about supporting this place.

The SA zoo has a pretty nice Tots area where we end up spending most of our time with our two little boys.

We have the membership pass and go all the time. The new "africa live" is great and we can't wait for them to finish and open the next section. Having the membership makes it nice to just go for a few hours and not feel like you have to make it an all day trip in the hot weather. Although in the tiny tot nature spot they do have a little river bank which is lots of fun for the kids to splash around. We usually take some snacks and since parking is free and we have the membership all we have to pay is gas to get there and home!

As zoos go, SA has a fairly decent one. They have a great "Tiny Tots" section aimed at the under 5 crowd. They even have a little beach - sand and stream for the kids to play in. Surprisingly it's very well kept and not dirty as one might expect. The new hippo exhibit is a must see, it's really cool to watch the hippos, I think the adults enjoy it far more than the kids, as the kids always want to get to the next animal. A couple of fun secrets- the older gibbon - kept in the corner by the butterfly exhibit will "sing" to you if you "sing" back. the tone is hard to describe but it's a whooping noise "ooohhhhhhp". She sings to my 4 yr old everytime. It's uncanny. Another hint- a parking one- if you get there early enough you can get great parking in the side lot right next to the zoo. Lastly go in the morning before it gets too hot, the animals will still be awake.
