"the word-of-mouth survival guide for SAN FRANCISCO parents"

I am a nurse and an informed health care consumer. I had a horrible experience with two of the midwives. Besides screwing up documenting my due date, they performed a quad screen when I specifically asked not to have the test. The midwife delivered the results (when I was not expecting any results beyond a pap) while I was at work without asking if it was a good time. The results came back borderline and I was so upset that a genetic screening test was performed without my consent leaving me with great worry over how to interpret the results. When I told her my trust in the practice was compromised she suggested I move to a smaller practice. She also suggested I see a mental health counselor which I found completely insensitive. Ended up meeting with one of the Mt. Auburn OB docs and he was very competent and great. Had an amnio and my baby is fine, but I will never go back to the practice again.

For women who are looking to be involved and informed in the process of pregnancy and childbirth, this is perfect. All modern medical options, including pain relief, are offered and accepted. The midwives at mt. Auburn can not be beat!

I wanted to give birth at a place that would not dictate me on how to do it. I work with a lot of women coming in and out, and quite a few recommended Mt.Auburn Hospital. Having given birth before with an OBI decided it wasn't for me, and went with the midwives. Even though you tecnically could get to see all of them at some point (there are 12, i believe); chancer are you will get to know one more. I had Robyn. But she was on vacation when it was time for me to give birth. Which doesn't mean my experience was spoiled. I was admitted in a pretty pissy mood. I was uncomfortable and just wanted the whole thing to be over with. The midwife on shift convinced me to put bad feelings behind and start over with a smile. And I did. The next afternoon Johanna helped me deliver my bundle of joy. She was super supportive as far as my birth plan went. She encouraged me the whole time, and i am proud to say I did it all medication free!
I would recommend MAMAH in a heartbeat.

I only had the best experience with Midwives.
They are willing to spend as much time as needed with you during appts. Quick to refer you if needed to an OB.
