I went to the Discovery Museum with my toddler and infant. It was pretty easy to navigate with two small children. I didn't have to worry about my toddler wandering off or getting swept up in the crowd. She really liked the bubble/water room because it was similar to the Boston Children's Museum, but without all the big kids pushing her out of the way. (I recommend saving this room for last since you'll be very wet after visiting it.) On the downside, it's small and tight inside. You can't bring in a stroller, so if you've got a baby, bring the sling or baby carrier. We spent a little over an hour, and I felt like that was just the right amount of time. We didn't need to stay longer. I recommend getting library passes or going when you can get a discount because I don't think it's quite worth the price of full admission.

I liked the concept of this place, but the simple fact is that it is in an old, tangled and dangerous house. The stairs are not easy to navigate. The place gets easily crowded. The staff is not all that friendly. There is no place to eat. If it is cold or raining, it is hard to snack outside. Let's face it - kids like to snack and need a break!!

Visit your local library - they may have discount passes available. Lots to do for kids of all ages, and tons of fun for adults too. Great way to combine learning with fun.

A fabulous museum for crawling babies to preschoolers. It's very low-tech but the kids adore it. In an old house, each room has a different theme--one room is a safari room with a tree house and tons of stuffed animals; a nautical room has a boat steering where and nautical stuff to explore; a play diner brings out the cooks; a water-play room complete with a bubble maker that kids can stand in. Really great museum, although your best bet is to go early in the day because it get truly crowded (and you can have a good wait to get in). Note, no food is allowed in the museum itself.

The Science Museum building is great for older kids! Lots of hands-on activities. Just make sure to check they are open, as they close once a year for refurbishing.
