My daughter will be 4 in August. She has been daytime potty trained for quite sometime now, since she was about 2.5. But now I would like to get rid of the pull-ups at night. She is excited about wearing underpants to bed, but so far has had only 2 out of 9 nights dry, all of the other nights she has had an accident. That with us waking her up at least once in the night to use the potty. I think she has all of her accidents in the early morning. Any tips/ideas?

How late at night do you permit her to have liquids? Maybe take her for an early morning bathroom trip instead of a night trip?

Limiting Ruby's liquids a couple of hours before bedtime really helped her stay dry (except for the bathwater she drank, grrrr) Also, I always made sure she was dressed very warmly for bed. Feeling cold makes me have to pee, so I figured it may be the same for kids. Anyway, I also kept a potty chair in her room, too, which she thought was great.

Sounds like she's not ready yet.  Not at all unusual.  Why don't you put her in a pull up so that she can go to the toilet herself in the middle of the night without waking you.  This would make her feel independent and give her a sense of accomplishment, rather than failing most nights.

When she's ready, you'll know it.

And good luck!

I too would limit the fluids, and some children arent physically able to hold their urine that many hours. I would do the pull ups, waking up in the middle of the night, and limit fluids. If that works than maybe stop waking up in the night but do the other two, once she is making it through the night than put her back in underwear. This is a very common problem for kids though, especially at her age, I wouldnt be worried at all about it

My daughter is exactly the same- 4 in August, started potty training at 2.5.

She has been night dry for about a month-it just happened.  My advice?  Who cares if she uses a pull up?  If it bothers her, then fine, work on it, but otherwise maybe just stick with the pull ups and enjoy your nice dry nights of slumber.

Our other trick, which I got from a friend, is to just barely wake my daughter up when we go to bed (around 10 or 11).  Otherwise she usually wakes up to pee, then insists on getting in bed with us- hate it...that will be another post, right =)

But basically, we didn't do anything special- I wish our culture would understand that being potty trained is as much developmental as it is behavioral-if they're not ready, they're not ready. =)  Hang tough mama, you'll be great!

well having 4 kids kinda helps me with this one  but talking strickly from my kids my first potty trained before 3 the second was after 3 and my son at 3 it was amazing when he (now 4 ) decided to just go threw with it I had been trying for a couple years (yes before age 2 lol)  and it took be taking a week with him in daycare to get him to actualy "get it" and that was explaining to him were all the kdis went running to I even gave him the stepping stool so he could be as I called in "king of the potty" and that was what worked it was like the light went off in his head and from then on rarely any problems well ok if he drinks way to much choc milk then we might havea  problem but hes pretty good and getting up inthe middle of the night to wake everyone up to let us know he has to go...  but hey atleast hes going in the right spot now.   my last #4 has been in the process of potty training for what seems like forever shes the earlist one she sonly 2 now but has been working on it for well over 6-7 months now I was so excited when she just went one day on a reg potty nothing fancy even though we had them for her it was the big potty she wanted and now its just trying to get it throguh to her her underware can be just as cute and soft as her cloth diapers (fyi shes the only cloth diapered child ifonly i knew what i do know they all would have been0

Yes,my daughter is night time trained.  She turned 4 on March 2nd, 2008.  But she still wants me to wipe her after each time she potty's.  It's really getting old & I'm wondering if this will ever end.

My son is NOT night time potty trained.  I tried the pull ups at night, but he tended to make a number 2 in them, and at 4 years old...well...that's just gross!!  So, we use diapers at night.  In the mornings he dresses himself, takes off the diaper and puts on his big boy underwear.  According to many mothers in his class, and his pediatrician, he is just not ready and it is not unusual.  My daughter went from diapers to underpants at the age of 4 and has never had an accident, but they say that girls mature faster...at least bladder wise!!

My son has been night trained since August 2007. But he did it himself. He went day and night dryness together. He turned 4 April 2008. NOW when he does get a hold of large amounts of liquids after 8pm (9pm is bedtime) I will put him in "Night" pants, which are night time pull ups. He does not like it but will cooperate for me.

My son just turned 4 Aug 4th and he is pretty much night time potty trained and he just mastered it this past week.  When I tol dhim that if he made it 5 days in a ROW with out going potty in his pants(night time pull up things) then he gets to be a big boy like his friends Jordan and Emilio....who are a little older than him.  so I think it was the cool factor to be like his friends that worked on him.

Good luck...one day I think it just happens....kinda like when you had to daytime potty train them.

My son turned four in April 2008. He was in "big boy underwear" by age 2 (but still put on a pull-up to poop until 2.5).  He was, oddly, nighttime potty trained for several months sometime during his third year.  But then he regressed, and is still wetting most nights.  Like previous posters, he puts on his own pull-up and puts it in the diaper pail each morning. He's been this way for close to a year; we just let him be--he'll be ready when he's ready.  :-)
