I have recently decided to use my neighbors daughter as a sitter.    I'm not sure how much to pay her.  Any suggestions?

If you're using her for date night, $4 per hour.  If she's watching your kids while you work, I suggest about $4-6 per hour base for 1 child and add $1-2 for each child after that depending on age.  I pay my part-time day care provider $8 per hour for 3 children (5, 2 and infant) and she watches them in her home and provides the food and beverages (except for my infant who is fed mother's milk or formula that we provide).  We provide a small amount of cash to be used for her to take the kids on outings and always provide enough to cover her meal or admission as well as the childrens' if she is taking them to a museum, restaurant or other such venue.

$8 per hour may sound like a big chunk of your hourly wage and it probably is for most folks.  We decided that although the hourly amount for our sitter exceeds what we would be charged for daycare, there are no other children around and she is a very loving mother (who has a school-age child) and will even pick up our kids.  Some daycares seem like kid factories - full of germs, stale air and little or no care or individual attention.  We didn't want that for our kids.

Live-in nannies typically get $10-13 per hour plus room, board and other benefits like going on vacation with the family and getting a day to herself while on the vacation and spending money.

These numbers could definitely be different for other areas of the country.  We live in West Michigan.

I am glad that you are putting a child to work, however I would suggest that you send her to a class at the red cross for baby sitters.  It essentially teaches them cpr, what to do in the case of emergencies and general baby sitting information.  I pay my babysitter 20.00 per hour (2 kids) and that is usually just for 4 hours, I also give a 20.00 tip at the end of the night.  She is awesome and my kids really look forward to "date night" so they can hang out with Jasmin.

Hope it helps!

Lauren

In DC, the going rate is $10-12 per hour.  Slightly less if your sitter is very young (13-15).

For the ladies in the West Hollywood area. Could you recommend someone that you have used? I'm just looking for someone 2 times a week M-F, maybe for 2 hrs a day. In my home preferably. I have a 17 month old and 2 month old. I would like to be able to spend individual time with each, so it would be one kid at a time.

In the Boston Area, $10 per hour is the babysitter is of driving age.  Slightly less for 13-16 ($6-$8 per hour)  I would increase that by $1-$2 per hour for each additional child.  I would also request a babysitting course as well to make sure they are up to speed on all of their safety precautions.

Yep, here in LA I am paying $15/hr for my college student with lots of kid experience.  It's really a stretch for us, since I am just starting a business, and really not making tons of $$$ yet.  But my son loves her, I am more productive.

I found mine on craigslist, but I wouldn't recommend it.  I had her fill out an application, checked references, had her "audition" with us a few times, etc.  BUT,  funny story, I posted the ad on a Sunday night after 10 pm, and by 8am the next morning has ***92*** responses! Ack...then I kept getting more and more, and finally took the ad off.  It was overwhelming...I think next time I would find a local mom networking site like this, and ask for references.

Good luck, you deserve it!!!

Hi, I live in New Zealand, so things might be different but we pay our neighbours daughter $5 per hour.  I think this is reasonably cheap but she is happy and I provide snacks, dvds etc as well.  If I am going to be very late, I usually give her a little extra.  Hope this helps :)
