"the word-of-mouth survival guide for CHICAGO parents"
I just heard about this class that UCLA is offering this summer. It sounds so interesting! It’s called
“Out of the Mouths of Babes” and it’s about how kids learn to talk. Whether they
learn through imitation or whether parents teach them. It also explains whether
children can learn a foreign language from listening to tapes or watching TV.
And if raising a child bilingual hurts or helps them.
Here’s an excerpt from the description: “Learn how
children acquire language, the most complex of human cognitive achievements. We
will study language acquisition from birth on, starting with how infants
perceive speech around them, and moving on to word learning and the ability to
produce and understand complete sentences. We will focus mainly on English, but
will also discuss other languages and groups, including children acquiring sign
languages and raising a child bilingually.” It sounds fascinating! It’s Tuesdays and Thursdays
6:30-9:30pm, August 3-September 11, 2009.
