Sometimes we go through stages at our house where I think my kids are starting to become better eaters and then they seem to fast!  Not too mention, they seem to only eat the same foods all the time.  So, in trying to branch out, please tell me what your toddlers/preschoolers eat.   Maybe it will give me more kid friendly ideas!

Well, I have the pickiest eater around. He's 21 months old.  But here is a list of the foods he DOES eat.

Rice cakes (always a great idea), grilled cheese, applesauce, bananas, apples, any kind of dry cereal, waffles, panckaes, carrots, raisins (well not anymore), my newest one is sunflower seeds...they are intrigued by their size....and I love them because it's protein for him, yogurt, bagels, wholegrain muffins. Seriously that is about all he eats.  How how could i forget two of his favorites.....Pizza and French fries!!    You can tell he's my second child...his brother didn't have french fries until he was like 2 and 1/2.    LOL!!

My 26-month-old DD has always been a good eater.  Her favorite thing, if you can believe it, is green beans - warm, cold from the fridge, or straight from a can.   She does go in waves, where she'll eat anything in sight, then not eat as well for a while.  And we've also been told to give her a slightly higher fat content in her diet, due to being very small, so she gets some things I would normally not give a toddler. But some favorites are:  Cheerios, Nilla Wafers, Oreo Cookies, corn dogs, grilled chicken, fish, french fries, yogurt, raisins, oranges, apples, grapes, bananas, blueberries, mango (almost any fruit really), any kind of meat (steak, pork, hot dogs), cheese, bread, tortillas, corn, pancakes, pasta and beans (lima, garbanzo, pinto, or black).

When she does start to give us issues with food, we don't press it.  Sometimes we play with her and tell her she can't have any of X.  Then we watch her from the corner of our eyes, and 9 times out of 10, she'll sneak some, then realize she likes it after all.  We've tried asking hre to just "taste it on your tongue", and sometimes that helps her decide she likes it, and we can thank her for trying it.  We also offer to let her use our forks and eat "mommy's food" or I'll feed her using her fork - it's amazing what she'll put away like that, even when what's on her plate is exactly the same as what's on mine.

I have discovered that my 2 year old son Griffin likes to pick and nosh on his food so I offer him smaller bite sized pieces with fun names and it makes eating more fun (and less stressful!). It's all about creatively marketing their food to them. Here are some ideas that I've used that may come in handy and Griff loves it!

"Alphabet Pancakes" - Cut pancakes into squares and triangles or letters to teach kids about shapes and the alphabet.

"Grilled Cheese Blocks" - Stack grilled cheese bites on top of each other so kids can "eat their way" to the bottom. We use ketchup as "glue" to stick the bites to each other.

"Pasta Rings" - Create penne pasta "rings" that they can "wear" and eat off their fingers.

"Tomato Fingers" - Slice up cherry tomatoes and place them on the ends of their fingers.eating.

"Veggie Dunk" - Place steamed carrot and broccoli bites on a plate with your choice of tasty dip, sauce or even ketchup so they can have fun (and make a mess) while they eat their veggies. He's obsessed with dipping now.

If you're interested, I created a product called Tiny Bites Food Shears so that parents can use food scissors to cut their kids food into easy to eat strips and bite sized pieces. I'm offering moms from Lilaguide $1.00 off - go to www.tinybites.com and at checkout, enter the promo code - moms.
