Hello,

My 4 month old baby is very large - 18+ lbs.  He soon will be too big for his infant car seat.  I am worried about moving him to a bigger car seat because he is still not very stable.  Can anyone recommend a car seat for chubby / wobbly babies that will last until he is 50-60 lbs?  thank you!

The Britax brandis very good for that.  Marathon is the one that is specifically for larger babies.  You can find them for less on craigslist and ebay--just don't but one over 4 years old (manufacture date) because they can stay in them for 4-5 years.

We love purs and they can stay facing backward longer, which they now recommend.

Hope that helps.

My baby who is almost a year now was and still is a big boy...just like yours.  It is a little scary at first when you first put them in a convertible seat, their heads hang a bit, etc. but from my experience just give it a little time and your abby will adjust..Mine did.  I have the Orbit toddler car seat. Its great, but I probably would suggest something like the Britax Boulevard CS..it is more padded on the sides to help the head wobbling...more importantly it will make you fell better.  I just read a great review on that new carseat..take care.

Remember that as your baby becomes more mobile he will start to shed the lbs a little bit.My little one went from chunky to bean pole and has stayed that way.

As for the seat, I second the Britax Blvd. Got it for my daughter when she outgrew the Roundabout, she's very tall for her age. It has a base so the baby/child sits up high like the infant seats. Even at 4.5 yrs old, 43 inches and 39 lbs she loves the seat and still naps comfortably in it.

I wanted to keep my baby rear-facing for as long as possible (she'll be two next month and she's still rear-facing), so we have a Britax Marathon and an Evenflow Triumph Advance. Both are great- both can be rear-facing to 33 or 35 lbs (don't remember specifically), and forward facing to 65 lbs (Britax) and 50 lbs (Evenflow). My daughter made the switch from her SafeSeat when she was about 15 months and 25lbs, so I can't speak for the appropriateness of the seats for a younger baby, but the Evenflow came with a pillow support for the head/neck that can be used in the rear-facing position to help with the "wobblies". The Evenflow has a cool ratchet system that allows you to tighten the straps via a wheel on the side of the carseat rather than from the strap between their legs. I like it because I feel like I am able to strap her in nice and tightly without the sometimes-awkwardness of pulling on the strap between the legs when they're rear-facing and you are constrained by the seat-back. One thing to be aware of with the Evenflow is that it is VERY wide at the top, and doesn't fit airplane seats nicely if you fly often. The Britax fits fine and there's also a very cool trick for attaching the LATCH hooks to a luggage carrier for insta-stroller in the airport! I love both seats for different reasons, and would recommend both.
