Hi i am a young mommy moving to san francisco on the first of august thanks to a job transfer. I am desperately looking for daycare for my 2 1/2 years old son....I have had no luck finding something or somebody I could afford(1700 isn't quite in my budget, which seems to be the going rate in schools)....Please if you fellow mommies could give me some referals and numbers, and if anyone knows of a more economical way to get daycare I would desperately appreciate any help I could get!!! Thanks a bunch, Cassandra p.s. I will be living in the Embarcadero area, right downtown....

Have you tried an online service, like Care.com? There's a huge variety of sitters/nannies there, at a big range of prices. I think the overall quality of sitters is higher than average. Also, they do free background checks (I also personally also check references and do interviews in person). If you're interested, they're running a promotion now and you can join for a discount if you put in the code CLUBMOM. Good luck. Finding good childcare is extremely stressful...

Welcome to the City! Two great resources: 1) Children's Council- you give them the zipcodes you are interested in and they give you the names and contact info- or that is how it was when I was looking. I found 2 great care providers.  I could look close our home, near my commute areas(muni station) or near my work.  2) SFkids.org is a great website with things to do, resources, classes, camps, calendar, etc.  They have a Childcare page with a lot of resources of places to look.  Good luck.

Because of work, I bounce between San Francisco and Los Angeles, but I've managed to find great help in both cities through a website called Kiddieko-op.com  My girlfriend Laura bought me a ticket to one of their events in LA as a gift when my daughter was born and it was great.  I met several sitters and moms within the area and received a book with the sitter's photos and resumes.  I still conduct the background checks, but it was a lifesaver so when I found out they had an event in SF, I made sure to register.  Whenever grandma isn't available, I just call one of the sitters in the book.  The sitters are pretty affordable too - though my SF sitters charge a bit more
