My daughter (5 1/2) has been going to sleep close to 10 lately.  She is used to going around 8:30, but has been having difficulty falling asleep in the last few months.  She's napping the same amount and gets enough sleep, so I'm not sure what's going on here.  Any suggestions?

My daughter is 10 months old, so I'm not sure but last summer I had my (at the time) 5 year old niece for the entire summer.   She doesn't nap anymore and she could stay up till 2am if you let her (and we did some times).  I found that she didn't want to sleep because she didn't want to miss anything (she felt left out).  What I did when I needed her to get to bed early was read her a few stories, talk to her and lay down with her (to get her to unwind).  She would soon drift to sleep.  I didn't mind the late nights as it was summer and since I work I wanted to spend as much time with her possible.  I think anywhere between 8- 9 is a good bedtime.  See if a new bedtime routine works.

Maybe she doesn't need the naps anymore. Some" quiet time" may suffice, where she can look at books or listen to some soft music that she likes. That would give her a chance to wind down without going to sleep. By bedtime she'll be ready to go.
