Talked to a doula today and she said to avoid laying on your back, since it's not good for the baby, and to not listen to other people's stories about pregnancy.  She recommended reading books by Ina May Gaskin.  She is a famous midwife that has been around since the 70's.

My OB/GYN also said that as you get farther along in your pregnancy, the best way to lie down is on your right side.  It has to do with your ability to breathe, and the fact that there's a vein (of yours) that you MAY end up putting some pressure on if you lie on your back.  But he didn't think it was terrible if I woke up on my back.  My friend's dr told her that if she lay on  her back and pressed on the vein, it would just wake her up, and then she could just roll over.  Neither dr thought there was much chance of actually causing the baby harm.

I liked talking to other people about their pregnancies, but I do agree that it's best to avoid horror stories.  And don't  believe all the old wives' tales.  Focus on positive things and get good information.

I slept on my left side throughout my entire pregnancy.  My doctor advised the left as the best scenerio, but that the right was the second best and safe option.
