Recently we were at the doctor's office because my daughter had a cold.  I pulled out a juice box since she had just woken up an not had a chance to have breakfast.  I asked my doctor if it would be alright if I gave her a juice box (sometimes they don't want you to give your child any food/drink in case they need to run tests).  He glared at me and said water would be better, but if I was going to give her juice it would be alright...  He then said "Juice is terrible for kids.  First of all her teeth are going to fall out and second of all it's detrimental to her body."  I am a realatively healthy person and I know that too much sugar is not good for anyone.  So in a way I was glad he jumped on our cases for giving her juice.  On the other hand, she been so stubborn when it comes to drinking anything.  She didn't like milk as a baby and still doesn't.  I've tried soy...no luck there.  She's not even that big of a fan of chocolate milk.  The only thing she really likes to drink is apple juice.  We've been pushing water like crazy and she's been drinking more of it, but she still gets one to two small juice boxes a day.  I'd love it if I could get her down to one juice box a couple of times a week.  Am I being to hard on myself and her?  What's a realistic expectation when it comes to kids and juice???

I use 100% juice, then cut it with water.  I also ask my DD to take a big drink of water before she can have juice, at home.  (We're doing this with milk right now, to get my DD to drink more milk.) When we run errands, I only bring water.  Let her see you drinking a lot of water.  I think all kids like juice - it tastes better!  But it is good to try to limit it, for all the reasons you gave.  I don't know that I've heard of a basic limit.  If she hasn't eaten, maybe try bringing a banana with you, instead of a juice box.  But I think you'll be fine, since you're working at it.

Thanks, those are great suggestions.  I especially like the idea of asking her to take a drink of water before she can have juice.  It's coming along, but we still have some work to do!

Have you tried adding fruit to the water?  Just fill up a pitcher in the morning and add some cut up strawberries, blueberries etc. After a couple of hours, the fruit will give it a little taste and can add some color.  Not that I always believe in fooling kids, but it might help!

I still dilute my kids' juice with half water (and they are 5 and 2), and also I always have those cute travel twisty sport top water bottles for kids ready in the fridge.  They love them!

My son will not drink water, but he loves milk. I will admit that he use to drink pop too. (To all of you glaring at me, yes I know pop is unhealthy for children) We found out that he LOVES V8 fruit splash. It has lots of vitamins & great flavors too. Also, if you are going to use juice boxes when you are out & about or for special occasions, try Motts for Tots. It has significantly less sugar than most juice boxes. We have found that by asking him to finish his milk at dinner & then he can have a small cup of juice afterwards is a good motivaor. I never tried diluting his juice when he was younger (he is now 4) so now that I have tried it recently I am not able to fool him
