I have a 14-year-old son and an 11-year-old daughter.  It's been this sort of unspoken rule that my husband will talk to my son about sex and, when the time comes, I'll speak to my daughter.  It was relatively easy to know when to start talking to my son, but it's proving harder and harder to know when the right time is to talk to my daughter.  In my generation, 11 is WAY too young to even discuss, but I've been hearing rumblings among parents that kids are getting information from all the wrong places at a ridiculously young age.  Would love to know how other families have dealt with this issue.

My daughter's not there yet, but honestly, I don't think 11 is too young.  Better for her to know too early than too late.  Plus, I appreciate knowing what my period was before I ever got it, and I know some parents lump that in with the sex talk.  My mom did the talk with both my brother and I (my dad just couldn't bring himself to do it) and my mom made sure my brother understood how women's bodies worked, in addition to his own.
