Topic: Milk Sensitivity

I have been told my son has a milk sensitivity....not an allergy.  However he can't eat dairy without getting sick and terrible rashes.  I have tried to re-introduce the dairy time after time because they say he will grow out of it and sometimes he seems to be doing OK and then all of a sudden he is really sick again. I can't figure it out. Any suggestions from anyone. The rash he will get is on his bottom no where else. Sometimes a runny nose which turns into a cough, etc. I am at a loss. He is 19 months and still drinking SOY formula because he won't drink SOY milk but does like regular milk but...he can't have that.  I am totally confused. I was also told that he is too little to test for allergies...would appreciate any advice from Moms. :> Thank you!

Hi OCMom!

Your son isn't too young to test for allergies, and sounds like my daughter's reaction to milk.  She is allergic.  If you'd like a doctor who will test your son and is very careful and knowledgable, call Dr. Berger in Mission Viejo!  He's across the parking lot from MV Hospital.  He wrote the book Allergies for Dummies.  He also does a lot of the research that brings new treatments and medications for our allergic kiddos. I highly recommend him!

I'd also say keep trying the soy milk - cook with it, like in pancakes, oatmeal, etc. Also using Tofutti ice cream and cheese products are a good way of getting soy milk into your son and getting him used to the flavor of it.  There are also chocolate and vanilla flavors as well as adding strawberry or chocolate syrup yourself - that could help you get him used to the flavor.

Hope this helps!

Thank you. I am glad you mentioned Dr. Berger because I have been given his name with my older son years ago and forgot about him.  I have been using the Silk Soy with Vanilla flavoring right now. I am so confused but sometimes I think the terrible rash is just caused by teething (but it is a bad rash) and then we were doing the Soy and I switched to the Trader Joes Vanilla Soy and his rash showed up again so I am not sure again if it is the soy or did he eat something or again if it is teething!  But it does seem if he has regular milk all day he will get the rash but sometimes if he just has a little he is ok. Seriously, I am totally confused! :>

It could be something other than the milk.  I'd definitely recommend seeing Dr. Berger.  He can do a quick skin test and see what pops up as an allergen.  It could be an additive you haven't figured out.  My daughter is allergic to cashews, and we found that out when she was 18 months old.  There is no telling how he ever came in contact with a cashew, but apparently she did at least twice if she's allergic to it!
