I just read an article about couples who do everything 50/50. It's something that seems ideal in theory, but doesn't usually work out in theory. In my home, even though my husband helps, I tend to do most of the child care and cleaning. It made me wonder about how moms out there are divvying up the workload. Equal? Or not so much?

My husband and I have always shared chores based on a few criteria - what do we like to do, what do we hate to do, what are we able to do?  For exmaple, before the baby, he did most of the cooking (because he's better at it and he likes it) and I vacuumed and did laundry.  He mows the lawn and I do dishes.  I get my daughter ready for day care and he picks her up in the afternoon and plays with her for a couple hours before I get home.  We are constantly changing our tasks as our daughter and her needs change and our schedules change, but we always try to share so neither of us is too stressed.  We both work full-time, so we definitely feel the need to share househould and baby chores.  It's not always exactly 50-50, but I think it's dreadfully old-fashioned and sexist to expect a woman to work all day, then come home and cook and clean and watch the kids while the dad puts his feet and reads the paper.  What kind of dad is that?  But I also know a lot of today's dads are caught between what their own dads did and what society is asking of them today.  So it may be helpful to make suggestions, ask what he's willing to help with, and explain why you need the help.  And what a great benefit he can get out of having special Daddy time while you cook, etc.

I sometimes feel it's not so much my husband who's resisting, but society!  It seems that the mom is blamed/praised more than dad -- even if both are responsible.  It's hard not to become a bit more invested.  In any event, thanks for the feedback.
