So, my daughters goldfish died this weeked while she wasn't home, and I wasn't sure how to handle it.  We ended up telling her the fish went back to the petstore because it was sick.... should I have told her it died?  Or bought an identical fish?

I'm all for telling kids the truth.  Even if you told your kids the fish died, they only have a vague understanding of that.  I don't think it's too much, especially because it's a fish.  I also think it's a good way to introduce death, since it's not that consequential (I'm assuming, of course) a relationship.  And if it was a strong bond, what a good way to talk about death and what it means to them.  There are always positive lessons in difficult events such as this.

 The next fish that dies...

Good luck!

I would have told her that the fish is up in heaven..and then went on to tell her about what that means in a manner that he or she would understand! Only because heaven is a beautiful thing to happen to all living creatures..and then i would of ended it by saying the fish is always going to be around in spirit as long as she believes..
