Please post a brief introduction.  I am Joyce, mother of a 5 yo in Astoria.  I work full time at an investment bank.  My son attends PreK and then an afterschool program while I am at work.

Hobbies (wait, don't hobbies require free time??) include reading, baking, scrapbooking, and needlework.

How about you??

Hello, I am Tang, expecting my firstborn on June 10th. We dont now whether it will be a boy or a girl. Very nervous and excited at the same time. I am sure you all know what it feels like around this milestone. I am also looking forward to my mother's arrival from Thailand. She will be here for 2 months to help out. I am still searching for a pediatrician in Astoria/LIC area and have lined up a few for interviews. SO fingers crossed we will find someone we feel comfortable with soon. Any suggestions are welcome!! I am a little nervous about having to walk even a block after just giving birth, the lamaze instructor said we have to see our own ped. within 48 hrs!! maybe we can find a wheelchair :O) good luck with everyone. i am excited to be part of this community and hope to be able to share some useful information once the little one arrives. right now, i am just focusing on getting good sleep each night :O) tang

Tang, you will be fine.  The day I was discharged from the hospital it was a blizzard.  could not pull the car out of the hospital garage in Manhattan.  We wrapped the carseat up in blankets and walked through snow drifts to a hotel.  And I do not think we saw a pediatrician for maybe 4 days after the birth.  And you can pick any pediatrician and then switch later if you do not feel hapy with them. No divorce required, just find another doctor if you are not satisfied.

Hi,

Just found this group and signed up.... :)

I'm a mother of an 8 weeks old girl and still adjusting to being a mom. Not as easy as I thought.... We live in Astoria and would love to meet up with other new/old moms. (I'm not referring to your age...) Astoria Park anyone???? Especially now, that the weather is getting to be nice.

Hobbies??? Well, before our daughter was born, hubby and I were very active with outdoor activities: camping, hiking, biking etc. Now: diaper changing, feeding, burping and sometimes, if we are lucky, SLEEPING!!!! :)

Hi Welcome Aboard!

I am probably the oldest mother here-- at least in terms of child age.  You will get used to it, establish your own patterns to mothering.  It is always exhausting, I think, but it does get better.  I still dream of an uninterrupted night's sleep, but I am told my son is really an oddity.  I think the majority of us are from Astoria-- I did quite a bit of Asotria marketing for the group :)  Where did you hear of us? (please someone say the Key Food near Ditmars, I worked so hard on those damn fliers LOL)

Hope to see you on the board or around Astoria soon!

Joyce

:)  that is cool-- i put the ads on CL also.  really trying ot get an active group together.

You are lucky you can walk all day with the baby in this weather.  My son was a winter baby and I still tried to get out a lot.  Are you staying home or going back to work?

Hey whatever gets us here, right??? :)

I'm staying home right now for 6 months, then I will be working from home for another 6 months. I'm not sure how that will work out, as right now taking care of my baby basically takes up all my time. So when will I do my work???? We'll see.

Welcome Patricia!

Working from home-- I wish I couild dothat, not realistic for my job (though I occasionally bring home work in the evenings and it is HARD to get peace and quiet)  My gf works from home full time and she has afull time childcare for her child (13 mos old) she haxs a sitter at her house 3 days / week and 2 days he goes to her SIL's.  She tried doing it without childcare and literally had a nervous breakdown (quit her job in a huff)

What kind of work do you do that hyou can work from home (jealous!!!)

Even if an infant sleeps a lot, buy the time s/he is 6 -8 mos they are going to want to creep around exploring-- and once they can walk... forget it- think about having a sitter.

Hi everyone. It's nice to see that the group has grown so much in the last week. Good job on the advertising, Joyce! (I found the group in Craigslist.) My son is 6 weeks old. I'm staying home with him until September 1st, and then I think I'll go back to work part time. I'm thinking about having a babysitter come a few days a week so I can work at few days a week before September, but we'll see. I live in Astoria too. And I would love to get together at Astoria Park! In the past six weeks, I think I've taken many dozens of walks alone with my son. He's very cute and all, but not much of a conversationalist at this point. :) Hobbies... reading, knitting, running, traveling... Wow. It feels like so long ago that I had a chance to do all of those things!

Well, I work for a software company as a lead programmer, so most of the time all I need is my computer, internet access and maybe a phone to talk to the clients. I can do all of that from home, it will only be the matter or having the time to do it. Like I said right now this is the plan, but I guess it could change in the next 4 months....

tessa_t: I know exactly what you mean!!!! I have been doing the same in the park. Just walking around and thinking who I could call to talk to in the meantime.... But usually everyone is working, so they don't really have time. We probably passed each other several times already... :) Do you go in the mornins or in the evenings?

mcbaby2008 05/15/2008 at 7:40 PM
wow, so nice to see a lot of people on! you ladies make me even more excited about being a mom, you know, the kind who has the baby to hold not inside the belly :O) id love to join u and ur babies in the park in the future (or let me know when you all decide to go one of these days i may just carry my belly out there for a good walk and pick your brain). when did you feel safe to bring an infant out and about in public? our lamaze class instructor not to go on subways before 4 weeks, is that so in your cases? i have this big trip to WA in the middle of august, presumably baby will be over 8 weeks (if the baby arrives around the due date which is june 10th). kinda nervous about it but hope for the best.

we just had our first interview with the first pediatrician on our list, dr. Demetrios Markouizos. he seems on point (hard to tell without a kid :O). i wasnt too keen on the waiting room which is a shared space by other clinics on the same floor (PT, labs, etc). but other than that, his clinical opinions seem to be in line with mine ie breastfeeding, vaccinations, early intervention. also concerned how his affiliated hospitals are out n flushing and long island in case of emergency. anyway, just thought id share this info with you all just in case anyone is interested to know. we are going to interview 2 others in the next 2 weeks.

mcbaby, we took our son out for the first time right after his one week doctor's appointment. It was just for a walk around the neighborhood and lunch at a quiet place (Il Bambino), but it definitely felt wonderful. We've been going out every day ever since. Of course, we don't let strangers touch him (actually, no stranger has EVER reached out to try to touch him) and didn't bring him to crowded places like the subway right away. Both our pediatrician and our childcare teacher told us it was unrealistic and nonsense to not take a baby out for two months, especially given the size of NYC apartments! But others' views on this may vary. I'll admit, I was nervous at first. But the benefits of getting out and enjoying some fresh air were obvious for all three of us, especially my son. Fresh air is a sure fussy-cure every time for him. I'm interested to hear what other's have done, though. I'm happy your first pediatrician interview went well! It's great that he's in line with your views on so many important subjects. It is odd that his affiliated hospitals are so far away. Do you think that's a deal breaker? Good luck with the other interviews! Please let us know how they go.
