What age are kids supposed to know their abcs? I think I'm behind here.  Any ideas on ways to do this beside just the song (which I dont think is really teaching letters but more just a memorized song)...

As an early childhood educator(and a mom of two), learning ABCs is certainly NOT the most important thing for young children to be learning. Most kids have plenty of exposure to ABCs during elementary school, and the real work of teaching to read is usually done in first grade. That being said, it can't ever hurt to continue to expose your child to letters, numbers, and other forms of print. Reading is actually one of the most significant thing you can do for your child's ABC learning, allowing him or her to be exposed to books on a regular basis, reading to them, and with them, and allowing them to read books on their own as well. Some other fun ideas for teaching ABCs are: - using cookie cutters with play-doh (or making actual cookies:) (with letter cookie cutters) - doing a "letter of the week" in your house and decorating a poster with that letter and drawing or cutting out pictures from magazines and cutting and pasting them on the poster and displaying it in your child's room, or around your house - going on a "letter search" either in your home, or outside on a walk in your neighborhood -making your own ABC book by either taking pictures of letters all around you, or pictures of your child doing things or playing with things that start with that letter and putting them together to make a book -print a sheet of letters (on your computer), cut them into squares and hide them around the room and let your child look for and collect them, and/or cut and paste them onto a piece of paper and decorate it. -my daughter and I (she's three now, but we've been singing it since she was two:) sing another great ABC song that actually teaches sounds as well, since I can't actually sing you the tune, you can make up your own, but it goes, "A is for Apple, Aaa, Aaa, Aaa. B is for Ball, Bu, Bu, Bu. . ."(and so on for each letter-it's great cause you can substitute any word that begins with that letter, or just stay on one letter and think of lots of words for it-a great way for children to play with words and recognize sounds). -for very young children, any blocks or toys with letters on them that you can play with and casually point out to your child are great, but don't waste your money on expensive "alphabet teaching" toys. These usually just produce rote memorization without any real learning going on Remember the focus is on making letter learning fun and interesting, and creating a basis for learning later on in when they're in school-if your child gets frustrated or loses interest, allow him or her to move on to something else. Hope that was helpful:)
