How long do I need to keep my baby rear facing? He hates the car and I think it would help if he could see out the front as we're driving!

Hi My Peanut,

Babies should be in rear-facing car seats for at least one year and until they weigh at least 20 pounds, but that's really a minimum standard. Extended rear-facing, beyond one year and 20 pounds, has big safety advantages that parents should consider.

However, I only followed the 20lb rule. My son and daughter both HATED being rear facing and I think it was because the didnt like not being able to see us in the front, and because I think watching everything out the rear window kind of freaked them out a bit.

I know once I was able to turn them around it made the car ride so much better!!!

Most people think they have to turn their children forward-facing when they turn one (if they have met the 20lb weight milestone). What you should know is that experts recommend leaving your child rear-facing as long as is possible. Their little necks are so fragile! The one year guideline was created because before around age 1, babies' necks are too fragile to support the force from an accident.

Why rush to turn them around (if they aren't terrible car travellers)? I understand turning the seat around if your child does not travel well and just screams and screams. But, if your child doesn't mind, keep 'em rear-facing. My daughter is 14 months and we plan on keeping her rear-facing as long as possible. Better safe than sorry.
